JAVA Engineer, MotaWord

MotaWord works to build the world’s fastest, cloud-based and collaborative human translation platform. They provide translation service in 76 languages, 55 countries and through the work of over 10 thousand translators.

MotaWord generates data on the client side and on the vendor side, they learn through process experimentation and work on building algorithms that can replace human project managers on translation projects. They allow clients to order translation service through their award-winning website, their solid API, multiple plug-ins and extensions and they want to grow that.

They are starting to replace one of the crucial components in their distributed systems. They will fork an open source project, and work with Red Hat team to improve it -read this as very nice code and tool base. You will actively commit to upstream, while maintaining their own fork.

They want you to join their team where they enjoy the freedom to innovate with a variety of technologies in a truly international entourage.

You will utilize and improve yourself on your programming and software design skills to design the best possible platform for their customers and translators. If you are a resourceful team player who does not shy away from taking responsibility and learning new things every day in all stages of development for a new venture, they want to meet you.

Their office is located in New York City, but they are wizards of remote-working also. They document everything and hold impromptu Google Hangout meetings any time of the day to bring their teams closer to target.

Depending on the team's goals, they may use any technology that helps reach their goals. This means a modern development environment, with as many technologies and concepts as they need, to solve a problem in the most convenient, beautiful and fastest way. However the stack of the project for this position consists of Java, Java EE, JavaScript; Linux, Docker and AWS. Needless to say, everything is in GIT, on top of automated server and code deployments.

They are a highly interactive group, so you will feel free to contribute in any stage and aspect of the development. They have two core values that they expect from their colleagues: research and learn from each other.

You will have one responsibility: get this project up and running within MotaWord with the planned feature set. On a daily basis, you will:

  • Plan and iterate feature implementations and software architecture,

  • Develop new features,

  • Maintain the current code base and apply bug fixes,

  • Integrate upstream into their fork,

  • Communicate with the Red Hat team maintaining the open source project,

Their startup environment requires an imaginative thinker with the ability to work independently and the ability to collaborate effectively with other team members.

Candidate Requirements

  • Excellent command of Java, familiar with Java EE, not stranger to SQL, server management/AWS and JavaScript

  • You are willing to work on conceptualizing and designing software, starting from an abstract idea, and orchestrating all elements in the platform to come up with the best solution

  • You have an idea about highly organized code bases with version control systems and keeping the documentation up to date at all times. Experience with at least one such project.

  • Possess a friendly and can-do attitude

  • A desire to constantly develop new skills (“Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.” ― Socrates)

This is a contract-based project. You can work remotely or in-house. The project is estimated to take around 6 months, with changes allowed.
